(Reuters) – A U.S. House committee on Thursday approved a proposal to provide airlines with an additional $ 14 billion in payroll aid as part of a broader COVID-19 relief package that is running through Congress.

It would be the third round of support for the pandemic-hit industry. American Airlines (NASDAQ 🙂 and United Airlines have warned about 27,000 vacations without an extension of the current package, which expires on April 1.

The House of Representatives Financial Services Committee, on a vote between 29 and 24, approved the $ 14 billion for airlines and $ 1 billion for contractors to cover payroll through September.

The funds will be included in President Joe Biden’s proposed $ 1.9 trillion COVID-19 auxiliary bill, whose original plan did not include new money for airlines. House spokeswoman Nancy Pelosi said Thursday she expected lawmakers to finalize legislation based on the bill by the end of February.

American Airlines said in a statement following the committee vote that the payroll support program, which covers employee wages and prohibits job losses, “has been a lifeline for our team members.”

U.S. airlines are burning millions of dollars every day as the pandemic depresses demand for travel.

The Air Line Pilots Association, the world’s largest pilots union, said the funds would “help prevent the additional financial devastation that would result if the airline industry were forced to take tens of thousands of workers off leave”.

Budget carrier Spirit Airlines However, (NYSE :), Allegiant Travel and Frontier Airlines have announced in recent weeks that they will resume hiring pilots later this year.

Reuters first reported on many details of plans to provide new aid to US airlines, transit systems, airports and the passenger railroad Amtrak.
