Tradeweb Trade-Traded Funds Replace – December 2021

The following data is derived from trading activity on Tradeweb Markets institutional ETF platforms listed in Europe and the US.

Total traded volume

Trading activity on Tradeweb’s European ETF marketplace totaled EUR 48 billion in December, while the proportion of trades completed through Tradeweb’s Automated Intelligent Execution (AiEX) tool hit a record 79.1% .

Adam Gould, Head of Equities at Tradeweb, said: “December wrapped up the highest-volume year ever for European ETF trading on Tradeweb, with over half a trillion euros executed over the course of 2021 in terms of tickets but also in relation to the notional volume executed via the solution.”

Loudness breakdown

All asset classes saw net purchases over the month. Trading activity in fixed income ETFs rose to 34% of total platform flow, beating the previous 12-month moving average by four percentage points. Stock-based ETFs accounted for 62% of total monthly volume, with “buy” outpacing “sell” by 14 percentage points. Products offering investment exposure to North American equities again proved to be the most aggressively traded, followed by their global equity counterparts.

Top ten by nominal volume traded

The list of the top ten by nominal volume traded in December included three ESG-focused ETFs, one fixed income and two equity products. However, the iShares Core S&P 500 UCITS ETF held out for the fifth straight month at the top.

ETFs listed in the US

Total traded volume

The consolidated US ETF’s total face value traded in December 2021 reached $31.4 billion, the platform’s second-best performance on record.

Loudness breakdown

As a percentage of total face value, equities made up 60% and fixed income 35%, with the remainder made up of commodities and specialty ETFs.

Top ten by nominal volume traded

A record 1,666 individual tickers were traded on the Tradeweb US ETF platform during the month. Six fixed income products were among the ten most actively traded ETFs in December, with the iShares iBoxx $ High Yield Corporate Bond ETF moving up two spots to the top spot from November.
