This well-liked household automotive has earned top-notch security rankings

The 2021 Chrysler Pacifica, a popular family van, is a Top Safety Pick +, according to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).

However, buyers need to look carefully to find the top-rated Pacifica variants.

Last week, the insurance industry-funded nonprofit said the headlight and pedestrian detection system improvements made in the 2021 model year brought the van to the top of the line.

Still, all Pacifica vans redesigned for 2021 achieved the highest possible ratings in almost every instrumented crash test conducted by the IIHS. Overall, the vans have first-class crash avoidance technology, including automatic emergency braking, at least when detecting and braking for other vehicles. Some optimizations made during production in October 2021 improved the ability of the automatic emergency braking system to detect and brake pedestrians and cyclists.

Additionally, the IIHS says the standard LED headlights have been upgraded from April 2021, which has reduced headlight glare and shifted ratings from “Bad” to “Acceptable”.

The Pacifica has been redesigned for 2021, but its predecessor was also rated a top safety pick. This model missed the “+” rating due to its “Bad” -rated standard halogen headlights. The closely related Chrysler Voyager 2021, which is only sold to fleet buyers, is equipped with these “poor” headlights.

The IIHS hasn’t said whether the Top Safety Pick + rating will carry over in 2022, though the Pacifica only sees minor updates for the new model year.
