This Is the Finest Place within the World to Retire Abroad in 2022
According to Live and Invest Overseas, one of Europe’s hidden gems is the best choice to retire overseas.
The coastal region of Comporta, Portugal received top honors in this year’s index of the 15 best places in the world to retire. It achieved particularly good grades in the categories Health Care (A +) and Crime (A). It also ranked high in cost of living (B +, on a monthly budget of $ 2,935) and taxes (B).
Comporta ousted Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, which ranked higher in cost of living (A +) and matched Comporta in healthcare (A +), but ranked lower in crime (B +).
The index looks at 15 locations in 15 countries and ranks them based on 13 categories:
- Cost of living
- Health care
- Whether English is spoken
- Expat community
- Infrastructure, including internet, electricity and house connection
- Access to North America
- Environmental factors
- Real estate restrictions
This year’s top 15 places – with their final overall grades – are:

- Paris, France – A-
- County Clare, Ireland – A-

- Highlands, Panama – B
- Istria, Croatia – B
