WASHINGTON (Reuters) – A hacking campaign that used a US technology company as a stepping stone to compromise a number of US government agencies is “the biggest and most sophisticated attack the world has ever seen”. Microsoft Corp. (NASDAQ 🙂 President Brad Smith said.

The operation, which was identified in December and, according to the US government, was likely coordinated by Russia, breached SolarWinds Corp. software. and gave hackers access to thousands of companies and government agencies who were using their products.

The hackers gained access to emails from the US Treasury Department, Justice and Commerce, and other agencies.

Cybersecurity experts said it could take months to identify the compromised systems and rule out the hackers.

“I think from a software development standpoint, it’s probably fair to say this is the biggest, most sophisticated attack the world has ever seen,” Smith said during an interview that aired on CBS ’60 Minutes on Sunday has been.

The breach could have harmed up to 18,000 SolarWinds customers who used the company’s Orion network monitoring software, and likely relied on hundreds of engineers.

“When we analyzed everything we saw at Microsoft, we wondered how many engineers were likely to have worked on these attacks, and the answer was certainly more than 1,000,” said Smith.

US intelligence agencies said last month that Russia is “likely” behind the violation of SolarWinds, which appears to be aimed at intelligence gathering rather than destructive acts.

Russia has declined responsibility for the hacking campaign.
