NEW YORK (Reuters) – The U.S. National Transportation Safety Board announced Monday that it had recovered debris from a crashed Boeing (NYSE 🙂 737-200 cargo plane and will continue to investigate the cause of the aircraft’s emergency landing off Hawaii last week.

Investigators plan to use sonar technology to locate the decades-old aircraft and restore cockpit voice and flight data recorders, the NTSB said in a statement. The plane had to land in the Pacific Ocean early Friday.

“Investigators plan to use side-scan sonar on Monday to examine the debris field, the condition of the aircraft and its location, including the aircraft’s depth below the surface,” the NTSB said. “This information is used to determine how and when the recorders can be recovered and how and if the aircraft will be recovered.”

The aircraft’s pilots had reported engine problems and were planning to return to Honolulu shortly before the forced landing, said the US Federal Aviation Administration, which is also investigating the incident.

At around 2:30 a.m., a U.S. Coast Guard helicopter, responding to reports of the crashed plane, spotted a field of debris and found a crew member holding on to the tail of the plane.

The NTSB said it planned interviews with the flight crew who were rescued, as well as air traffic controllers and maintenance personnel.
