A sixth batch of $ 1,400 stimulus checks has been issued, bringing the total number of payments sent to date to approximately 161 million.
Since distribution began in March, more than $ 379 billion has been sent direct to Americans.
The latest set includes roughly 2 million checks valued at approximately $ 3.4 billion. About 900,000 of the payments were made by direct deposit while nearly 1.1 million were made out by paper check.

Recipients include people who were not previously registered by the IRS. Approximately 700,000 stimulus checks valued at more than $ 1.3 billion were issued to these individuals this round after the IRS processed their 2020 tax returns.
The government has encouraged people who don’t receive federal benefits and typically don’t file tax returns to submit their payment information and receive their stimulus money this year.
This request applies to the most recent $ 1,400 payments as well as the first two stimulus checks that people may also be eligible for.
A repayment credit has been added to this year’s tax form so people can claim the money from past stimulus checks if they haven’t already received them.
More “plus-up” payments
The new round of economic checks also included additional “plus-up” payments to those who are now entitled to more money after processing their 2020 tax returns.
About 700,000 of these top-up checks were issued with this round, totaling about $ 1.2 billion.
Additional funds are available to people whose circumstances have changed since filing their 2019 tax return, for example if their income has decreased in the last year or they have added an additional family member to their family. If so, the IRS will issue an additional payment once the 2020 return has been processed.
Money for federal beneficiaries
The sixth series of stimulus checks also included approximately 600,000 payments to social security and supplementary income beneficiaries, including those with a foreign address.
If you have not yet received your $ 1,400 Stimulus Check or want to request direct payment from previous rounds of up to $ 1,200 or $ 600 per person, the IRS urges you to file a tax return this year.
This includes federal beneficiaries who wish to submit information about eligible dependents, as well as homeless people.
Tools to help you file your taxes
If you make $ 72,000 or less, you can file your federal tax return for free using the IRS’s Free File program. The IRS has more information on their website on how to apply for your stimulus checks when you normally don’t have to file a tax return.
The IRS also offers tax preparation programs, including tax advice for the elderly, as well as Voluntary Income Tax Assistance (VITA). The VITA program is available to people with incomes of $ 57,000 or less, with disabilities, or with limited English proficiency. Although many websites that offer these services are temporarily closed due to Covid-19, the IRS does offer a locator tool on its website.
