WASHINGTON (Reuters) – General Motors Co said Sunday it agreed to recognize California’s authority to set vehicle emissions standards under the Clean Air Act.

The move will call the Detroit automaker into question for state fleet purchases by the state of California, GM said.

In a letter to California Governor Gavin Newsom, the automaker pledged to recognize California’s authority. GM said in the letter it was “required to comply with California regulations”.

Shortly after Joe Biden was elected president, GM turned around in November 2020 and no longer endorsed efforts by the then-Trump administration to prevent California from setting its own emissions regulations.

“GM supports California in our struggle for cleaner air and emissions reduction as part of the company’s drive for a zero-emissions future,” said Newsom. “This agreement will help accelerate California’s leading commitment to fighting the climate crisis.”

GM announced plans in January to eliminate tailpipe emissions from new light commercial vehicles by 2035. In June, GM increased global spending on electric and autonomous vehicles to $ 35 billion by 2025, 30% above its previous forecast.

“We are determined to work with California to achieve a just future in transportation,” said Omar Vargas, GM’s director of global public policy.

In November 2019, California announced that it would cease all new vehicle purchases for state fleets owned by GM, Toyota, and other automakers that support former President Donald Trump in the battle over exhaust emissions.

California said it purchased $ 58.6 million in General Motors (NYSE 🙂 vehicles between 2016 and 2018.

In April, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced that it would restore California’s legal authority to set strict vehicle emissions regulations and zero-emission vehicle regulations.

In July, 16 Republican attorneys general called on the EPA to oppose the restoration of California authority. “The Golden State is not a golden child,” they wrote.

GM previously supported the reduction of overall emissions in the 2019 California deal with rivals Ford Motor (NYSE :), Volkswagen (DE :), Honda and others, but urged the Biden government to give automakers more flexibility in achieving CO2 emissions -Give reduction goals.

California plans to ban sales of new gasoline-powered cars from 2035, a move the Biden government does not approve. Biden has called for 50% of new cars to be sold that are electric or plug-in hybrids by 2030.
