Okay first things first! What exactly is a loan freeze and how does it work? Good question! A credit freeze is a service offered by most credit reporting agencies that essentially allows you to freeze, suppress, or “freeze” your credit report. Now there are a few cases where this can be very helpful. For example, in cases where identity theft has been discovered or is suspected to prevent someone from opening new accounts on your behalf. Or some people who travel abroad for long periods of time use this service for reassurance. So you don’t have to worry about identity theft when you are out of the country. Or sometimes government officials use this service to hide their personal information from the public. But for the most part, it’s just a tool to help prevent identity theft. So here is what you need to know! If someone tries to request a frozen report or open an account without your permission, the office will not release it and the lender will not be able to access your report. It is really easy to freeze your report. Just call the credit bureau and request it. OK? You can just as easily remove a credit freeze with a phone call. Within an hour, they must clear the thaw or “thaw” your report. Now all credit bureaus must offer this service, not just the three big ones, but also additional offices like LexisNexis, SageStream, Innovis and CoreLogic. They all offer this as an option. Now, there are some theories that are popular in the credit repair industry that claim that freezing credit reports can help repair credit. And one of those theories is if you freeze a credit report with the three offices i.e. Equifax, Experian and TransUnion. And then you dispute an article that is on the frozen report, then the creditor or the office is essentially tied and unable to review. And then the other theory is that you can freeze additional credit agencies providing information to the three big bureaus. If you argue with the offices, they will not be able to access the additional office this way, and the item you are complaining about cannot be verified. For example, for this theory, if you deny a bankruptcy that LexisNexis delivers, public records such as bankruptcies are forwarded to the three major bureaus. They first freeze LexisNexis and then argue with the three offices. Now the idea is that since LexisNexis is frozen, the big three can’t verify it, and boom, it is magically cleared. That sounds great. But is it true? Well, unfortunately, like most things in life, this sounds too good to be true. True. This also applies to these theories. You are just wrong! OK? You are not true! Here’s why this is important. The truth is, freezing credit reports to stop the dispute process – it sucks! It doesn’t work at all! Suppression is only used to prevent identity theft or to hide information if you are a government official or someone who could be harmed by disclosing that information. The only thing that causing credit reports freezing in relation to loan repair is that lenders cannot access your reports but it does not stop the dispute process.
