Amazon and Google set to attend White Home discussion board on quantum know-how By Reuters

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Inc (NASDAQ :), Google (NASDAQ 🙂 and Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ 🙂 are expected to attend a Biden government conference on Tuesday focused on quantum technologies as the U.S. government works to fend off hacking threats and corner a burgeoning growth industry.

The White House’s Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP) is hosting the event, which will discuss critical quantum computing applications that are expected to run a million times faster than today’s modern supercomputers.

Boeing (NYSE 🙂 Co, Honeywell International Inc (NASDAQ :), International Business Machines (NYSE 🙂 Corp, Intel Corp. (NASDAQ 🙂 and Northrop Grumman Corp (NYSE 🙂 is also expected, according to a management spokesman.

“Quantum computers and quantum sensors are very excited, and there is a certain amount of hype associated with that,” said Charlie Tahan, deputy director of quantum information science at OSTP.

“But what we’re really getting at: What applications could a future quantum computer carry out that our society could really benefit from?”

The technology, which is based on core principles of physics, is still in its infancy but has become a darling of investors looking to revolutionize healthcare, finance, artificial intelligence, weather forecasting, and more.

President Joe Biden’s administration is particularly focused on the impact of quantum technology on national security, which promises the ability to easily break encryption standards in use today.

China, which Washington regards as its main competitor overseas, has also made significant efforts to develop the technology.

The Biden administration also hopes to encourage more students to get into the field and increase cybersecurity around private research and development to prevent snooping, Tahan said.

Congress has already poured hundreds of millions of dollars into industry, including quantum research labs, and the bills currently under review could add billions more.

The organizations ColdQuanta, D-Wave, IonQ, QC Ware, Quantum (NASDAQ 🙂 Economic Development-Consortium, Rigetti Computing, Vector Atomic and Zapata will also attend the meeting in the White House.
